MEET means to come into the presence of somebody at a particular time or place. Getting to gather is called meeting. Meeting may be of two persons or more. Usually the number of persons participating in a meeting is limited, because it is restricted to the registered members of that body. Meeting may be entering into conference, argument, or personal dealings with. In the meeting there may be encounter or sharing experience. Coming face-to-face and coming together for a common purpose is essential part of meetings. In ancient days the meeting was the act of assembling for a hunt or for competitive sports. But in the present world it has a connection with creative objects. There are various kinds of meetings such as;

SWAP MEET is a gathering for the sale or barter. CAMP MEETING is in a series of evangelistic meetings usually held outdoors.  PRAYER MEETING is an informal gathering for worship and prayer. In a STUDY CIRCLE MEETING an intensive analysis of an individual unit [may be a given problem or judgment of the court] stressing developmental factors in relation to environment, case history, the law on the point and its consequences and application are discussed.

CONFERENCE is also a meeting but on a bigger scale where matters of common concern are discussed by formal interchange of views. In ancient days it was mostly connected with the organisations of a religious denomination or an association of athletic.

In a conference the resourceful persons and experts give a talk on the given subject, such as business, politics, science or service, which is followed by a discussion or question / answers. In a conference the experts and the guides are invited in advance to give a write up or a dissertation on a given subject. The discussions go for a long time though in the present days it is restricted to 3-4 days. The audience is also made known about the subjects and problems likely to be discussed in the conference. The main purpose of the conference is to discuss the given problems. Though the participants are in the listeners, they are the main gainers from the discussions in the conference.

NEWS CONFERENCE is a press conference which is in the form of an interview or announcement given by a public figure to the press. In the days of electronic advancement the conference is also a meeting with limited persons on a telephone or a chat on internet where a caller can speak with several people at the same time. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE has a wider net covering various countries. It is also known as ‘WORLD MEET’. It always takes a hard effort to make international conference a success, unless it has an objective of sightseeing or a holiday making.

SEMINAR is a place where a group of advanced students studying under a professor with each doing original research and all exchanging results through reports and discussions. Thus it is a scheduled meeting of advanced thinkers for giving and discussing information. It is a group discussion within a group of advanced students on the given subject. However to get the benefit of the seminar, the audience is invited to listen the views of the learned thinkers.

WORKSHOP, as per dictionary meaning, is a small establishment where manufacturing or handicrafts are carried on. But for us it means a brief intensive educational program for a relatively small group of people that focuses on techniques and skills in a particular field. It is place where one can develop the skills which are already with the participant. Improvement of the skills by discussing the experiences and difficulties with the experts is the main motto of the work shops. Since the coordinator has already informed the experts about the subjects and the level of the participants, every care is taken to see that the participants are benefited by improving and sharpening their proficiency skills.

SYMPOSIUM literarily means to drink together, a friendly party with music and conversation. But it is also a social gathering at which there is free interchange of ideas like a formal meeting at which several specialists deliver short addresses on a topic. Perhaps the discussion in a symposium may be lively because it is accompanied by a boost of wine and whiskey. It is a discussion by learned with a goblet of wine not the quarrel among the drunkards over the glass of whiskey. It was Aristotle who first stared the symposium for the student and teachers in his school. In a symposium the topic of discussion may not be declared in advance, but is always related to common problems. Though the discussion in a symposium is of a philosophical or theoretical in nature, it has a practical application for utilisation in the profession.

REFRESHER COURSE is another important kind of meeting. It is aimed at refreshing the professional skills of the members and improving the same. It may be residential [popularly known as RRC] or non-residential. In RRC the accommodation is provided to the participants of the refresher course. Absence of accommodation by the organisers makes it non-residential. In the work shop all members are invariably expected to participate but in refresher course only few may actively participate in the discussions. Remarkable change in the present trend of RRC is  towards holiday making and sightseeing, which is also supposed to refresh the professionals. The CORRESPONDENCE COURSE a course offered by a correspondence school and it does not form the part of our present topic as it is not a kind of meeting.
